RYE, N.H. (WHDH) - A swordfish that washed up on the shores of a beach in New Hampshire has puzzled officials, who say the fish is very rarely seen anywhere near the shoreline.

According to the New Hampshire Marine Mammal Rescue Facebook page, officials received a call on Monday from police in Rye that a live swordfish had washed up on the beach.

Officials say the swordfish was no longer alive, but it provided a unique opportunity for officials to learn about why it may have washed up on shore.

The Marine Mammal department says that there was no plastic in the stomach of the fish and no signs of hooking or other gear.
