MUNICH (WHDH) — Heavy rain and strict security didn’t seem to dampen the spirits of beer lovers in Germany as 2016’s Oktoberfest began Saturday.

The annual festival opened on Saturday in the southern German city of Munich.

Participants weren’t concerned about the heighted security as they enjoyed the flowing beet inside the beer tents.

Authorities added extra security to the even after a series of terrorist attacks in Europe.

“There’s a lot of security guards around,” said Sabrina Sheley, a tourist from New York. “I feel very safe. I was nervous coming into it but, but, I feel very safe when I see the strong German men protecting me,” she added.

Various traditional bands and beer wagons parade through Munich during the opening March of the Innkeepers.

Oktoberfest runs through October 3.
