The USDA has announced that Pilgrim’s Pride Corporation has recalled more than 4.5 million pounds of chicken due to possible "extraneous materials" in the products.

The Waco, Texas-based company recalled a total of 23 products from its Gold Kist, Pierce Farms, and Sweet Georgia brands of chicken. The recall is an addition to an earlier recall from April 7.

The USDA says the chicken products can contain materials such as plastic, wood, rubber, and metal. The products were produced between Aug. 21, 2014 to March 1, 2016.

Several consumer complaints regarding plastic contamination were received, which led to the recall. No adverse effects have been reported as a result of consuming the products.

The USDA urges consumers not to eat these products and to throw them away or return them to the place of purchase.
