WASHINGTON (WHDH) - The original bucket from viral sensation the “ALS Ice Bucket Challenge” will soon be on display at the Smithsonian.

The institution announced the bucket will be included in a new permanent exhibit called “Giving in America” at the National Museum of American History. The exhibit will open next week on “Giving Tuesday,” the name given to the day following two of the biggest shopping days of the year, Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

The Ice Bucket Challenge began in 2014 when Florida golfer Chris Kennedy chose to perform the challenge – having ice dumped on one’s head – and donated money to ALS. Several of Kennedy’s relatives participated as well, and the Internet-driven challenge soon spread across the world.

The challenge raised more than $100 million, funds that fueled research finding a new gene linked to ALS.
