BOSTON (AP) — Top state lawmakers say they will not delay the start of the state’s new recreational marijuana law.
House Speaker Robert DeLeo and Senate President Stan Rosenberg issued a joint statement Monday saying the Democratic-controlled Legislature would “respect the will of the voters,” and not attempt to push back the effective date of the law.
The ballot question approved by voters last month is scheduled to take effect on Thursday. It will become legal for adults to possess and use limited amounts of marijuana, and grow up to a dozen pot plants in their homes. But it will remain illegal to sell the drug for at least another year.
DeLeo and Rosenberg said they were continuing to analyze provisions of the new law. Changes could still be made after it takes effect.
