PORT HURON, MI (WHDH) — Strong winds disrupted the annual Port Huron Float Down on the US side of the St. Clair River over the weekend, pushing 1,500 people in dinghies over the border and onto Canadian shores.

Most of the unintentional border crossers came in dinghies, inner tubes, rafts or other flotation devices, creating a headache for law enforcement on both sides of the river.

High winds brought them to a number of points along the Canadian shore near Sarnia, Ontario.

Winds were consistently blowing at 10-15 knots and gusting up to 27 knots.

Police, border security and Coast Guard agencies from both sides stepped in to help round up the boaters and return them to Port Huron, Michigan.
