BOSTON (WHDH) - A water main break sent water shooting out onto Tremont Street early Friday morning, leaving behind a big mess for the morning commute.

A spokesperson for Boston Water and Sewer said a valve at a construction site near Hotel AKA on Tremont Street gave way just after 1:30 a.m. Then at 6:30 a.m., the spokesperson said more water began spewing from a second nearby main, causing a partial road closure for hours.

“I think the city right now, to be honest, is just chaotic. Complete chaos, and the traffic’s a major problem,” Margaret Chaberek said.

The building manager for Tremont Temple Baptist Church said about three-feet of water flooded the basement of the building.

“When I got here, the street was completely flooded, and all the water was coming through my basement and sub-basement,” said Edward Lopez, building manager for Tremont Temple Baptist Church. “It’s pretty bad. We’ve got a big clean up, replace floor, fix a lot of walls down in the sub-basement.”

Crews were able to patch up the road in time for the end of Friday’s morning commute. Lopez said it will take days for them to clean up the mess inside the church.

“We actually have a Spanish service, but I think it should be fine for them to conduct the service on Sunday. We just need to make sure that side – that’s where they have the service – is cleaned up,” Lopez said.
