CAMBRIDGE, MASS. (WHDH) - Cambridge Police helped a stranded snapping turtle cross the road on Wednesday.
Students at the Fayerweather Street School noticed the large snapping turtle in the middle of Concord Avenue after school.
Officers McGinty and Neil were on patrol and noticed a crowd of kids and adults trying to help the turtle cross, so they stopped traffic and helped guide the turtle across the road.
With the help of teachers, students and parents, the officers dug two holes under a fence to help the turtle get into the Fresh Pond Reservation.
According to police, the turtle was “initially stubborn and resisted efforts to move it under the fence.”
Police said the turtle kept snapping at officers when they tried to move her.
The eventually placed a board against the fence to discourage her from going back toward the street and left her with room to get herself back into the reservation.
The officers are now known as the “turtle cops” by teachers and students.
