The first major snowfall of the season saw western Massachusetts and most of Worcester County collect the most inches overnight when it came to the Bay State.

While areas east of I-495 saw anywhere from 1-2 inches to a coating of the white stuff, Great Barrington out in the Berkshires saw 9.4, while the rest of Berkshire County saw between 4.5-9 inches, according to reports from the National Weather Service.

The further east the snow went, the greater the fall off, with Hampden, Hampshire and Franklin counties seeing anywhere between 2-8 inches before arriving in central Mass.

Spots in Warren (5.2), Brimfield/Fiskdale (4) and Barre (3.8) led the reported totals for Worcester County, with Hardwick (3.7) and Auburn (3.2) rounding out the top 5 for snowfall.

Worcester itself saw about 2.5 inches, warranting a parking ban in the city while a number of residents dealt with slippery conditions throughout the evening.

Multiple minor accidents and crashes were reported from Stockbridge to Merrimac to Brookline throughout Sunday night.

By 6 p.m., Massachusetts State Police issued speed restrictions for parts of the Mass Pike, from New York to roughly Ludlow/Belchertown, Mass., lowering the limit to 40 mph. All the while, at its height, the MassDOT, deployed some 843 pieces of equipment for snow operations.

By Monday morning, with much of the snow already melting, restrictions were lifted as communities in eastern Mass. woke up to, at most, just over an inch or two, though cold temperatures around 25-30 degrees remained.

Boston ultimately saw an average of .9 inches, one of its lower “First Snow” totals over the last five years, 4x less than 2020 when the city was hit with 4.3 inches on Oct. 30, though certainly more than the .1″ inches that fell on Nov. 15, 2018.

Meanwhile, southern New England saw its fair share of high snow totals, as well. North Canton in Connecticut saw 7 inches according to NWS sources, while most of the Providence-area in Rhode Island saw at least 4.
